Hypnosis for chronic illness: Zehira’s story with Crohn’s

OMNI Hypnosis International

Living with a chronic illness means more than managing symptoms. It means appointments, medications, setbacks and the constant question of what the next weeks will bring. Hypnosis for chronic illness cannot change a diagnosis. But it can change how you live with it, and for some people that makes a real difference. Zehira’s story shows what that can look like. It is one case, told in her own words.

Zehira’s story

At the age of 17, Zehira was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, one of the most common chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. Long years of suffering followed: countless medications with side effects she found unbearable, several operations, long stays in clinics and hospitals.

When her story was first published, Zehira was 40. She came across as cheerful, carefree and funny, full of joy in life. But that had only been true for a few years. “Thanks to hypnosis, I am symptom-free today,” she says. She has had no symptoms since 2019, as she describes it, and she credits hypnosis for that.

Zehira connects her illness with traumatic experiences in her childhood and youth. In hypnosis, she says, the dark feelings from back then lost their power, and she was able to free herself from anger and hatred. Her life has changed completely. Today she stands with both feet on the ground, enjoys her work and looks to the future with confidence.

In this video on YouTube, Zehira talks about how painful her life with Crohn’s disease used to be and how she is doing today.

What her story means, and what it does not

In one case like this, it is tempting to draw big conclusions. We do not. Zehira’s experience is real and valuable, but it is one person’s path. It does not show that hypnosis cures Crohn’s disease, and nobody should change or stop their treatment because of it.

Medicine does not regard Crohn’s disease as caused by emotional experiences. Its causes are complex and still being researched, and genes, the immune system and environmental factors all appear to play a role. The course of the illness also varies. Many people go through phases of active inflammation and phases of remission, with or without a clear reason.

What many people with a chronic illness describe, though, is that stress, fear and old emotional burdens affect how they live with it. That is where hypnosis can come in.

Coping with Crohn’s disease: more than the gut

Coping with Crohn’s disease means dealing with pain, fatigue and unpredictable symptoms, and also with everything around them. Some people plan their day around the nearest restroom. Some avoid social events or travel. Others live with fear before every examination, or with memories of difficult hospital stays. Years of illness can leave anger, grief and exhaustion behind.

None of this shows up in a blood test, but all of it affects quality of life. And all of it is something hypnosis can work with.

How hypnosis for chronic illness can help

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention in which the critical, analyzing part of the mind steps back. In that state, it becomes easier to work with emotions, inner images and automatic reactions. For people with a chronic illness, this can be helpful in several ways.

Stress and relaxation. Many people notice that stress affects how they feel. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis can help the body shift out of constant alarm and into a calmer state.

Fear of procedures. Hypnosis can help people approach examinations, treatments or hospital stays with less fear.

Pain and discomfort. As a complement to medical pain treatment, hypnosis can change how pain is experienced. You can read more in our article on hypnosis for pain management.

Old emotional burdens. In cause-oriented hypnotherapy, the hypnotherapist and the client look for experiences that still carry an emotional charge, like the ones Zehira describes, and work on releasing that charge.

Sleep and energy. Better rest can make difficult days easier to get through.

What is gut-directed hypnotherapy?

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specific form of hypnotherapy that focuses on the digestive system. In sessions, the client works with images and suggestions of calm, comfort and a well-regulated gut. It was developed for irritable bowel syndrome, a functional disorder of the gut that is different from Crohn’s disease, and it has been studied most in that area.

For inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease, the research is more limited. Research suggests that hypnosis may help some people with quality of life and with coping, but it is not a treatment for the inflammation itself. If you are interested, talk to your gastroenterologist about it.

Hypnosis alongside your medical team

If you live with Crohn’s disease and want to try hypnosis, a few principles help.

Keep your gastroenterologist informed, and continue your treatment as prescribed. Tell your hypnotherapist about your diagnosis, your medications and any recent flares. Watch for warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, fever, blood in the stool or signs of dehydration, and contact your doctor right away if they appear. And give it time. Hypnosis is not a quick fix for a long-term condition. It is a practice that can grow with you.

A good hypnotherapist works with your medical care, not against it. They do not promise healing, and they do not advise for or against any treatment. What they can offer is support with how you live with the illness, day by day.

Working with clients who live with chronic illness

If you are a hypnotherapist, coach or health professional, you will meet clients with chronic conditions. Supporting them well takes more than technique. It takes respect for the medical side, clear boundaries and the ability to work at the emotional causes behind stress and fear.
