Why OMNI Is the Gold Standard: What ISO 9001 Really Means in Hypnotherapy

OMNI Hypnotherapy Training: Quality over quantity. ISO 9001 certified since 2015.

Picture this. You take your car in for service. You expect every step to be documented, every part to be vetted, the shop to follow clear rules. Nobody trusts the brake job to gut feeling. In a hypnosis session, the situation is often the opposite: soft words, dim light, a lot of trust, very little standard. This is exactly where OMNI breaks the pattern. Since 2015, OMNI has been the first hypnosis training organization in the world to be certified to ISO 9001. What does that really mean for you?

What ISO 9001 actually means in hypnosis

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management. It requires processes to be described, measured, and continuously improved. Manufacturing has lived by it for decades. Hypnosis was long considered out of reach for that kind of rigor. Hypnosis, the argument went, is an art, not a process.

Hansruedi Wipf, President of OMNI Hypnosis International, dismantled that assumption. He came out of the automotive industry, where he spent years as an international procurement professional, and he knows the strict quality philosophy from the inside. What works can be described. What is described can be repeated. What can be repeated can be measured. And what is measured improves.

The numbers behind the gold standard

With that mindset, the OMNI training was certified to ISO 9001 in 2015. The OMNI therapy process and the specialty methods HypnoDoc®, HypnoDent®, HypnoNurse®, HypnoKids®, and HypnoSport® were audited at the same time. The recertification runs every year. Today the network counts roughly 20,000 certified hypnotherapists worldwide, with more than 50 training centers in over 20 countries.

Standardization was never an end in itself. It is what made the scientific study of hypnosis at the University of Zurich possible in the first place. Three studies stand out. The fMRI study (de Matos et al., 2023, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience) made distinct brain network patterns visible across two OMNI hypnotic depths. The EEG study (Niedernhuber et al., 2024, Cortex), a collaboration with Cambridge, identified an interhemispheric frontoparietal network that supports hypnotic states. And the MRS study (de Matos et al., 2024, Scientific Reports) provided the first-ever evidence of neurochemical changes in the brain during hypnosis. Deep hypnosis shows elevated myo-inositol in the parieto-occipital region. None of this would have been possible without a reproducible induction.

Three examples from clinical practice

What becomes visible in the lab can be experienced in the real world. Three short examples.

  • Hirslanden Clinic, 2024. A patient had thumb surgery without any chemical anesthesia, supported by a certified OMNI graduate. A skeptical Swiss public-television reporter was on site and watched a clearly documented hypnotic process replace conventional anesthesia.
  • Kantonsspital Baden. Three months after graduating from the OMNI training, two practitioners took on a leg operation with no general and no local anesthesia. It worked. The headlines followed.
  • HypnoSport® at the elite level. Adrian BrĂĽngger, CEO of OMNI Hypnosis International and longtime head coach of Pfadi Winterthur handball, has used the same standardized approach with athletes whose names now appear on Olympic and World Championship rosters. The advantage was never a miracle ingredient. It was a repeatable process, the same kind of mental rehearsal Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods made famous in US sport.

Quality over quantity: the OMNI stance

Hansruedi Wipf tells these stories with a quiet smile. Hypnosis is not a miracle, he likes to say, but with hypnosis the seemingly impossible often becomes practical. Behind that line is a clear stance: quality over quantity. A training program worthy of the name has to teach reproducibly. It has to test what it promises. And it has to be willing to put its own processes back in front of external auditors every single year.

The consequences reach further than a certificate on the wall. Hospitals and universities work with OMNI today because the ISO standard creates a shared language. Conversations with insurers move differently when a process is documented. Studies become possible because an OMNI induction is as reproducible in Zurich as it is in DeLand, Florida, where Gerald F. Kein laid the groundwork in 1979. That lineage runs back through Kein to Dave Elman, the American pioneer of modern hypnotherapy. OMNI did not just preserve that heritage. It shaped it into a form an auditor can examine and a researcher can measure.

What you can do next

If this combination of science, craft, and stance speaks to you, two next steps are simple. First: visit hypnosis.info for current dates, locations, and formats of the OMNI hypnotherapy training, live, online, or hybrid. There is likely a certified OMNI instructor within driving distance of you. Second: on June 20 and 21, 2026, the International Hypnosis Congress in Switzerland opens its doors at the AXA Arena in Winterthur. Two days of live demonstrations, workshops, and the international community that carries this gold standard out into the world every day. A worthwhile place to see what ISO 9001 actually looks like in a hypnosis session.

Bottom line

ISO 9001 in hypnosis sounds dry at first. In practice it is the opposite. It is the precondition for hypnosis to be used in clinics, measured in research labs, and passed on responsibly in training. If you want to guide real transformation, you will not get around this standard. The world needs more excellent clinical hypnotherapists. Maybe one of them is you.
